    The influence of annealing on the superconducting properties of eutectic high-entropy alloy NbScTiZr was examined by measuring magnetization, electrical resistivity, and zero-field specific heat. Additionally, the extent of lattice strain was assessed via the analysis of lattice parameters and Vickers microhardness. The greatest lattice strain was inferred in the sample annealed at 400 °C. Field-dependent magnetization datasets indicate enhanced flux pinning in the as-cast, 400 °C annealed, and 600 °C annealed samples. The superconducting parameters such as upper critical field, Ginzburg–Landau coherence length, and magnetic penetration depth do not strongly depend on the annealing temperature. However, the Maki parameter shows a peak at 400 °C annealing temperature and correlates with the magnitude of lattice strain. This suggests that greater lattice strain may enhance the Maki parameter by altering the orbital-limited field through the modification of flux pinning strength. Although the influence of lattice strain is less discernible in zero-field specific heat measurements, the superconducting parameters deduced from specific heat data suggest a potential for strong-coupled superconductivity in samples heat-treated above 600 °C. Our investigation underscores the substantial impact of lattice strain on the Maki parameter of eutectic HEA superconductors, primarily through the modulation of flux pinning strength.

    We have investigated the impact of high-entropy conditions at the rare-earth site on the structural property and magnetic ordering temperature of the antiferromagnet DyCo2Si2. The lattice parameters are insensitive to the increased configurational entropy, but the antiferromagnetic ordering is suppressed under the high-entropy state. In the antiferromagnets, the competing magnetic interactions would disrupt the antiferromagnetic ordering.

    Normalized VSTE–H loops measured for generators fabricated from LPE-grown yttrium iron garnet Y3–xBixFe5O12 (YIG/Bi:YIG) films agree well with the normalized M–H curves observed for those films by using a vibrating sample magnetometer. VSTE and M are the spin-thermoelectric (STE) voltage and the YIG/Bi:YIG magnetization depending on an external field H, respectively. The coincidence between VSTE–H loops and M–H curves indicates that VSTE strongly depends on the magnetic property of ferrimagnetic insulator YIG films incorporated in STE generators. We try explaining the STE generation with VSTE–H loops from a viewpoint of domain magnetization processes in single-crystal YIG/Bi:YIG films grown by liquid phase epitaxy (LPE). We exemplify that our idea about the fundamental mechanism of STE generation in an insulator-based generator also well explains the mode of spin waves generated under a temperature gradient ∇T parallel to a plane of Pt/YIG bilayer interface. © 2023 Institute of Electrical Engineer of Japan and Wiley Periodicals LLC.

    An insulator‐based spin‐thermoelectric (STE) generator is composed of a thin paramagnetic metal (PM: Pt) layer for generating the STE voltage V<sub>STE</sub> via the inverse spin Hall effect and a ferrimagnetic insulator (FMI) film or slab used for producing spin‐wave spin currents due to a temperature gradient . Yttrium iron garnet (YIG) is a key material used for the FMI of STE generators. We examined in detail the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) properties of YIG (Y<sub>3</sub>Fe<sub>5</sub>O<sub>12</sub>), Bi‐substituted YIG (Y<sub>3‐x</sub>Bi<sub>x</sub>Fe<sub>5</sub>O<sub>12</sub>) and Bi‐ and Al‐substituted YIG (Y<sub>3‐x</sub>Bi<sub>x</sub>Fe<sub>5‐y</sub>Al<sub>y</sub>O<sub>12</sub>) films grown by liquid phase epitaxy (LPE). Bi‐substituted YIG films exhibited the large FMR damping and high STE voltage when the films were incorporated in the STE generator. The LPE‐grown Y<sub>2.35</sub>Bi<sub>0.65</sub>Fe<sub>5</sub>O<sub>12</sub> film exhibited the FMR linewidth ΔH of 30 mT and the V<sub>STE</sub> of 70 μV for the ∇T of . This paper comprehensively presents the origin of the STE generation in the insulator‐based generators on the basis of the results of FMR and STE measurements. To clarify the origin of STE generation in the generators fabricated from single crystal YIG (YIG, Bi‐substituted YIG and Bi‐ and Al‐substituted YIG) films grown by LPE, three principal factors are explained: (a) thermal energy transfer from the phonon system to the spin system, which strengthens the heat excitation of spin precession, through the spin–orbit coupling enhanced by the growth‐induced magnetic anisotropy of LPE‐grown YIG films, (b) in the YIG films incorporated in the STE generators, the generation of spin‐wave spin currents owing its origin to the ferromagnetic spin exchange interaction acting between neighboring spins due to , and (c) how the spin currents pumped into the Pt layer from the YIG film at the Pt/YIG bilayer interface are affected by the magnetization processes of single crystal YIG films. It is concluded that the STE generation of insulator‐based STE generators can be explained from a viewpoint of the spin dynamics under the effect of in the Pt/YIG bilayer structure. © 2024 Institute of Electrical Engineer of Japan and Wiley Periodicals LLC.

    We report the magnetic properties of the as-cast high-entropy alloy (HEA) FeCoNiTi, characterized by a dual phase comprising the face-centered cubic (fcc) and hexagonal C14 Laves phases. The HEA manifests three distinct ferromagnetic orderings at 1084, 214, and 168 K. The emergence of the 214 K transition is attributed to the influence of the C14 phase. The high-temperature ordering at 1084 K is associated with the fcc phase, which exhibits an additional ferromagnetic ordering at 168 K. The coercive field of the fcc phase attains 667 Oe at 400 K. Electronic structure calculations conducted for both phases substantiate the presence of ferromagnetic ground states. Comparative analyses between experimental and theoretical values are undertaken in the context of saturation magnetization. A comprehensive discussion is presented, delving into the origin of the relatively high coercive field observed at high temperatures in the fcc phase.

    This chapter discusses the superconductivity and hardnessHardness of Hf–Nb–Ti–V–Zr, Al–Nb–Ti–V–Zr, and HfMoNbTiZr body-centered cubic (bcc) high-entropy alloys (HEAs). In particular, owing to the discovery in superconductivity of equiatomic quinary HfMoNbTiZr, superconducting properties are compared under a fixed maximum configurational entropy. This comparison reveals a negative correlation between the Debye temperatureDebye temperature, θD, and the superconducting critical temperature, Tc, which is in contrast with the positive correlation expected for Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer superconductors. A negative correlation is a new feature of superconductivity in a high-entropy state, and can be explained by the uncertainty principleUncertainty principle.     This chapter reviews the discovery and current status of high-entropy alloy (HEA) superconductors. The categorization of HEA superconductors involves bifurcation into two distinct classes based on their crystallographic features. The first class comprises alloy systems represented by body-centered cubic and hexagonal close-packed structures, while the second class pertains to compound types. Within each of these classes, we expound upon the exotic properties, applications, and materials designMaterials design in alignment with the themes of this book. Furthermore, we elucidate the interrelationships between the subjects addressed in this chapter and those expounded upon in the subsequent ten chapters.
