  • Seeing the Invisible: Reflective Inquiry into Universal Design for Learning and Learner Diversity Reviewed

    Publishing type:Research paper (scientific journal)

In Japan's increasingly diverse higher education landscape, universal design for learning (UDL) has emerged as a promising framework for promoting inclusive learning environments. While existing applications of UDL tend to focus on structural strategies, this small-scale inquiry examines how an instructor's reflective practice plays a central role in realizing UDL's full potential. Grounded in Schön's model of reflective practice and informed by Brookfield's framework of critically reflective teaching, this research investigates how the instructor's perceptions of learner diversity evolved over a semester-long universal design course attended by 11 second-year students at a Japanese college. Data sources included students' learning logs and survey responses regarding barriers to learning and course evaluations. The analysis revealed various invisible barriers that students experienced, such as anxiety about communication, discomfort with group activities, and sensitivity to environmental factors. Concurrently, students showed diverse and less visible forms of engagement that occurred outside of classroom settings. Through critical self-examination, the instructor developed a deeper awareness of individual learning differences and began to challenge earlier assumptions that relied on observable behaviors as the primary indicator of student engagement. This metacognitive shift prompted changes in instructional decisions and teaching philosophy, illustrating how engagement with the UDL framework can stimulate critical awareness and evolving instructional perspectives. The study suggests that reflective practice may play an important role in helping instructors to fully engage with UDL and respond effectively to learner diversity. It also contributes to faculty development discourse by highlighting the potential of UDL to foster instructor transformation through reflective engagement toward more inclusive teaching.

In this study, universal design for learning (UDL) frameworks enhanced with technology were introduced in programming courses, with the aim of constructing a learning environment that considers the diversity of learners in higher education. The curriculum was designed with options that encourage self-selection of learning formats and resources (e.g., face-to-face and online; teachers, peers, and web contents). Analysis of learning logs in the learning management system and course-evaluation questionnaires revealed that students generally learned well based on their self-selection in accordance with their various characteristics and needs. Several students positively evaluated the flexibility of the course design. In addition, the students’ behavior and attitudes made the instructor aware of the potential needs of the learners. These results suggest that the introduction of UDL with technology in programming course is helpful in creating an inclusive and autonomous learning environment with promoting the teacher’ s perception about diversity of learners.

<p>In order to find out whether there is any difference in sound localizability between vision impaired and sighted individuals, we carried out the sound localization tasks of the subject's frontal azimuth by using three different sound source pointing methods in a semi-anechoic dark room. Twenty vision impaired and twenty normally sighted subjects participated in this experiment. The three pointing methods employed were (1) directing by the face, (2) directing by the body trunk on a revolving chair and (3) indicating a tactile direction cue horizontally placed in front of the subject position. Seven sound emitters were arranged at various angles (0°to ±80°) from the subject's midline and 2.0 m from the subject. The result showed that, in each angle, the difference between the vision impaired and sighted subjects were not very large at the center (0°). However, the localization performance of the vision impaired subjects was significantly better than that of the sighted subjects especially in the periphery (-80°and-X80°). In the whole frontal area (-80°to +80°from midline), the vision impaired subjects showed smaller deviations than the sighted subjects without regard to pointing methods. The present results indicated that the sound localizability of the vision impaired at the frontal azimuth is superior to the sighted particularly in the periphery.</p>

Preliminary experiments were carried out to investigate the feasibility of using an electroencephalogram and heart rates to evaluate the efficacy of finger acupressure on the key points of planta pedis (both soles). Continuous electroencephalograms were recorded from 19 electrodes based on the International 10-20 electrode placement system on 22 university students (21±2.3 years). Spectral power changes were obtained at each electrode site. The power of the α_1 frequency range (8-10 Hz) increased slightly during acupressure although no statistical significance was observed, while heart rates decreased in all subjects (p<0.05). Cerebral cortex asymmetry in the spectral power changes was not clearly observed during the right and left sole acupressure. This preliminary study suggests that a classification of subjects is necessary in understanding brain wave data during acupressure on soles.

In order to find out the most suitable and accurate pointing methods to study the sound localizability of persons with visual impairment, we compared the accuracy of three different pointing methods for indicating the direction of sound sources in a semi-anechoic dark room. Six subjects with visual impairment (two totally blind and four with low vision) participated in this experiment. The three pointing methods employed were (1) directing the face, (2) directing the body trunk on a revolving chair and (3) indicating a tactile cue placed horizontally in front of the subject. Seven sound emitters were arranged in a semicircle 2.0m from the subject, 0° to ±80° of the subject's midline, at a height of 1.2m. The accuracy of the pointing methods was evaluated by measuring the deviation between the angle of the target sound source and that of the subject's response. The result was that all methods indicated that as the angle of the sound source increased from midline, the accuracy decreased. The deviations recorded toward the left and the right of midline were symmetrical. In the whole frontal area (-80° to +80° from midline), both the tactile cue and the body trunk methods were more accurate than the face-pointing method. There was no significant difference in the center (-40° to +40° from midline). In the periphery (-80° and +80°), the tactile cue pointing method was the most accurate of all and the body trunk method was the next best. These results suggest that the most suitable pointing methods to study the sound localizability of the frontal azimuth for subjects who are visually impaired are the tactile cue and the body trunk methods because of their higher accuracy in the periphery.

Previously we reported that cultured rat GABAergic amacrine cells can evoke subthreshold graded depolarization and action potentials. Both types of electrical signals are thought to contribute to neurotransmitter release from their dendrites, because Ca(2+) channels in amacrine cells can be activated at a subthreshold level (around -50 mV). The aim of the present study is to describe the spatiotemporal pattern of the spread of these electrical signals in an amacrine cell, using a computer simulation study. The simulation is based on physiological data, obtained by dual whole-cell patch-clamp recordings on the soma and the dendrites of cultured rat GABAergic amacrine cells. We determined passive and active properties of amacrine cells from the physiological recordings. Then, using the NEURON simulator, we conducted computer simulations on a reconstructed model of amacrine cells. We show that graded potentials and action potentials spread through amacrine cells with distinct patterns, and discuss the electrical interrelationship among the dendrites of an amacrine cell. Subthreshold graded potentials applied to a distal dendrite were sufficiently localized, so that each dendrite could behave independently (dendritic independence). However, at a suprathreshold level, once action potentials were triggered, they propagated into every dendrite, exciting the entire cell (dendritic interdependence). We also showed that GABAergic inhibitory inputs on the dendrites suppress the dendritic interdependence of amacrine cells. These results suggest that an inhibitory amacrine cell can mediate both local and wide-field lateral inhibition, regulated by the spatiotemporal pattern of excitatory and inhibitory synaptic inputs on its dendrites.

In the present study, we tried to improve sound localization of audible traffic signals by expanding frequency range of two kinds of sound signals (original sounds)presently used nationwide. The sound modulation was made by addition of octave sounds of original sounds on computer and the result of modulation was confirmed by Prosecuting time-laPs frequency component analysis. The evaluation of modulated sounds was made using two sound sources discrimination test. It was found that effect of sound modulation was prominent for one kind of original sounds. From the results, it was suggested that expansion of frequency range is effective for sound localization when original sound has a certain characteristics.

Chizu Town is one of the most pioneering, sparsely depopulated mountainous regions in Japan, and is famous for developing a grassroots resident autonomy movement. This movement, initiated in 1984 under the slogan the "Zero-to-One Movement" has continued for 40 years, evolving in form but maintaining its essence. This study analyzed the activities of the ‘Yamagata Residents Group’ established in 2008 as part of the series of Zero-to-One projects. A survey targeting all households in the district was conducted to clarify how the Residents-Group activities were perceived by residents. Also, Focus Group Discussion for the local government and other groups/individuals involving revitalization of the district were conducted to find out how the Residents-Group activities to date have been evaluated. A comprehensive analysis of the resulting data suggests that the practices of the Residents-Group represent a ‘New Concept of Resident Autonomy.’
