  • Hiroyuki Fujioka was born in Mie, Japan, in 1975. He received the B.E., M.E., and Dr.E. degrees from Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto, Japan, in 1997, 1999, and 2004, respectively. From 2002 to 2008, he was with the Department of Information Sciences, Tokyo Denki University, Saitama, Japan, where he was an Instructor until 2005 and afterward was promoted to an Assistant Professor. Since 2008, he has been an Assistant Professor with the Department of System Management, Fukuoka Institute of Technology, Fukuoka, Japan. His research interests include theory and applications of splines, and task planning and control of robots. Dr. Fujioka is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Institute of Systems, Control and Information Engineers (ISCIE), Robotics Society of Japan (RSJ), and Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME). He is a recipient of the 2004 Sunahara Prize and Young Investigators Award from the ISCIE.

    This study considers the problem of selecting images that enhance the perception of attractiveness from a series of 3D captures of Buddhist statues, utilizing the advanced visualization capabilities of Grad-CAM++, an enhancement over traditional Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM). By leveraging convolutional neural networks (CNNs), Grad-CAM++ enables the identification of features that contribute to at-tractiveness in images, as perceived by observers. To validate the effectiveness of this approach, the study incorporates a comprehensive survey involving human participants to assess their reactions to the images selected by our method. This combination of computational analysis with human feedback not only showcases the capabilities of Grad-CAM++ in selecting appealing images from complex 3D datasets but also validates its utility through empirical evidence. The findings provide signifi-cant insights into the intersection of computer vision technology and cultural heritage, proposing a novel method for appreciating and evaluating the aesthetic qualities of cultural artifacts.

    In this study, we delve into the challenge of compressing and decompressing digital-ink data obtained from handwritten inputs on devices such as pen tablets, etc. We present a new approach using sparse Gaussian process regression in order to compress digital-ink data into some kernel matrix consisting of a sequence of pseudo-inputs. Moreover, to enhance the accuracy of compression and decompression, we introduce a dynamic programming (DP) approach for the optimal selection of dominant pseudo-inputs. The effectiveness of our method is substantiated through a series of experimental studies.
