    Recent developments in wind turbine design research account for the effects of velocity fluctuation and the characteristic turbulence of the installation location site to improve performance. For the design, a low-cost natural wind generator and a laboratory-based performance evaluation of the wind turbine are useful. This paper describes a new actively controlled multi-fan wind tunnel that generates natural wind at a reduced cost. The driving section of its wind tunnel has 100 PC cooling fans that are controlled by an original embedded system. The fluctuating velocity wind is successfully generated with a mean velocity 7m/s, turbulent intensity 2% and turbulent integral scale 5 m, 10 m, 20 m, based on Karman’s power spectrum density function. In particular, the wind satisfies the Kolmogorov’s -5/3 multiplication rule of inertial subrange with the frequency range 0.01~2.0 Hz. Furthermore, the performance of a wind turbine in steady and natural winds can be investigated. From the results, it is made clear that integral scale has a large effect on the wind turbine performance. The maximum power coefficient in natural wind of the integral scale 5 m and 10m is 124% larger than one of steady wind with the same mean velocity 7 m/s.

    For dental therapy, a dentist often touches a patient face in order to identify the causes of pains such as a tumor and/or cancer. Although the importance of maxillofacial palpation has been recognized, practical training with a dental patient has not been conducted for taking care of the safety of the patient in dental school. The training of therapeutic planning with an advising doctor would be effective to enhance the quality of dental therapy. Then, this study has developed a virtual training system for maxillofacial palpation which can be utilized in dental education. In this study, we first took a multi-slice CT data from a human head mannequin in order to obtain the shape data of a virtual patient model. This study adopted Meshless Method (MLM) to construct the dynamic model of the virtual patient model. In the experimental results using a haptic interface, PHANToM Omni, the parameters of MLM influenced the surface deformation of the virtual patient model. This paper finally discussed the availability of MLM for the virtual training system and clarified the current issues that should be solved to utilize the system in dental education.

    The effects of turbulent intensity and vortex scale of simulated natural wind on performance of a horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) are mainly investigated in this paper. In particular, the unsteadiness and turbulence of wind in Japan are stronger than ones in Europe and North America in general. Hence, Japanese engineers should take account of the velocity unsteadiness of natural wind at installed open-air location to design a higher performance wind turbine. Using the originally designed five wind turbines on the basis of NACA and MEL blades, the dependencies of the wind frequency and vortex scale of the simulated natural wind are presented. As the results, the power coefficient of the newly designed MEL3-type rotor in the simulated natural wind is 130% larger than one in steady wind.

    Palpation is important medical diagnostic technic to make correct diagnosis of symptomatic state. It requires a lot of palpation experience under leadership of an experienced medical doctor. Hence, a palpation training system with virtual model of an affected part is useful to get better at the skill. However, there is no practical training for maxillofacial palpation in the dental education curriculum in Japan. So, it is necessary for dental students that the virtual training system is developed, which can to practice maxillofacial palpation. Then, a trial palpation training system for maxillofacial disorder is developed by using virtual reality model and haptic interface. The system is consisted of a PC and the haptic device-PHANToM Omni. A virtual affected part model is constructed from multi-CT images through commercial software. In particular, the dynamic responding virtual model and real-Time analysis method through simplified mesh free method are improved. Consequently, we succeed in operation at the real-Time by the palpation training system.

    A rotating detonation engine (RDE) is one of candidates of aerospace engines for supersonic cruse, which is better for propulsion system than a pulse detonation engine (PDE) from the view of continuous thrust and simple structure. The propulsion performance of a proto-type RDE and a PDE by single pulse explosion with methane-oxygen is investigated. Furthermore, the performance of the RDE with acetylene-oxygen gas mixtures is investigated. Its impulse is estimated through ballistic pendulum method with maximum displacement and damping ratio. The comparison of specific impulses of the mixture gases at atmospheric pressure is shown. The specific impulses of the RDE and the PDE are almost same with methane-oxygen gas. Furthermore, the fuel-base specific impulse of the RDE with acetylene-oxygen gas is about over twice as large as one of methane-oxygen, and its maximum specific impulse is 1100 seconds.

    There has been an increase in the number of dentist since the 1950s in Japan. This has been recognized as one of medical issues in Japan. The increase of dentists causes a reduction of diagnostic opportunity per dentist and becomes a factor which declines the quality of dental therapy. By the way the education contents implemented in dental college has not been changed, where dental students study the knowledge and technique for intraoral radiograph. In the dental examination room, dentist often touches a patient face to identify the causes of disease such as dental curies and/or tumors. This diagnostic method has been called as maxillofacial palpation. Because some of dental diseases can be found by maxillofacial palpation, this diagnostic method has been recognized as the important skill for dentist. However, no practical training of maxillofacial palpation against a patient has been included in the curriculum of dental education. A training system which enables dental students to practice maxillofacial palpation with a patient was requested from the dentists, and then this study aims to develop a virtual training system for maxillofacial palpation that provides dental students to touch a patient face virtually. The system consists of a personal computer and a hap tic interface. The computer processes a virtual patient model which reacts graphically and dynamically against the hap tic interface operated by a trainee. This study applies free mesh method to the dynamic model of virtual patient model in order to reduce the computation cost. This paper introduces a basic concept of free mesh method and discusses the validity of this method through the experimental results.

    Regardless the importance of maxillofacial palpation, any practical training for dental patient has been in the dental education in Japan. This study aims to provide a virtual training environment of maxillofacial palpation to dental students, where the palpation training for virtual patient can be repeated without any risks and costs. In this paper, we design and construct a virtual cephalic model based on a linear finite element, which reacts visually and dynamically against the operation of a haptic interface. Our experimental results show that our proposal system achieves a real-time palpation simulation. Finally, we will discuss about the validation results with a coauthor dentist.

    Palpation has been considered as one of the important diagnostic skills for doctors, which is conducted on a patient to identify the size, the consistency, and the location of a subcutaneous tumor. Accurate palpation skill often detects the cause of disease early. Even in the field of dentistry, palpation has been considered as the important diagnostic skill for dentists. By the way, any practical training of palpation against a patient did not implemented in the dental education because the patient safety has a priority more than its educational effect. Then we propose a training system for maxillofacial palpation by using virtual reality and haptic interface. The details of modeling a virtual patient model for the training system are shown in this paper, and the experimental results are also described.

    Maxillofacial palpation is a physical examination technique where face or jaw are touched with fingers to determine their shape, consistency and location. Dentists utilizes palpation to diagnose pathological condition of a patient suffered from maxillofacial diseases. This paper proposes a virtual training system for maxillofacial palpation. To provide a virtual palpation system, a basic patient model is constructed based on linear elastic finite element method. Finally the simulation results and the remained issues making the system more practical are discussed. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

    The wind turbines with a flanged-diffuser shroud-so called "wind-lens turbine"- are developed as one of high performance wind turbines by Ohya et al. The steady and unsteady wind turbine performances are investigated in the paper. The flow structure around the compact-type wind lens turbine is made clear by PIV and CFD in steady wind. Also, that turbine show higher efficiency than the conventional wind turbine. Furthermore, the performances of the conventional wind turbine and the compact-type wind-lens turbine in unsteady wind are experimentally and numerically investigated. Experimental and numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the dependence of frequency of the harmonic oscillating velocity wind on the power coefficients. Consequently, using the present designed rotor, the compact-type wind-lens turbine shows better performance than the only rotor one in sinusoidally oscillating velocity wind. Moreover, the numerical estimation can predict the power coefficients for the fluctuating flows in 94 to 102% of accuracy. © 2012 The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.

    This study aims to develop a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) system that numerically estimates the influence of bloodstream on aortic aneurysm and helps to reveal aneurysmal growth mechanism. To complete our purpose, the first issue is to precisely extract aneurysmal regions from patient's medical image data. Computed tomography angiography (CTA) has been commonly used to diagnose patient's aneurysm. Previously, the authors had applied region growing method to CTA and had achieved to roughly extract aneurysmal region, in which fuzzy inference had been constructed based on pixel feature and adopted as the growing criteria. In order to reconstruct a finite element model of aortic aneurysm that concerns the influence of aortic wall's deformation due to blood pulsation, the parameters of fuzzy inference have to be tuned automatically. Hereby this study attempted to optimize the shape of membership function and the contents of inference table of fuzzy inference by using generic algorithm (GA) with evolution strategy. © 2012 ICIC International.
